“But when God our Savior revealed His kindness and love, He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy.  He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.  He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior.  Because of His grace He declared us righteous and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.” -Titus 3:4-7

God revealed His kindness and love for us through the cross.  It wasn’t anything we did.  We could not have done anything to win God’s love.  It was already there.  While we were yet sinners, He loved us! (Romans 5:8). Everything He did for us was out of His love for us.  What did we ever do for God that was so amazing?  How did we come to deserve His love?  By ignoring Him; or outright rebellion against Him?  Maybe He fell in love with us because of our pride and selfishness?  God IS love.  It is simply His nature.  The scripture above tells us that He saved us simply because He is merciful.  He washed away our sins and gave us new life through the Holy Spirit because He is generous.  He declared us righteous and gave us confidence in eternal life because He is gracious.  God loves us because He IS love.

God loves us and wants fellowship with us because that is what He created us for.  We did nothing to deserve anything, and we cannot work toward earning His love.  He gives it freely.  I need to remind myself of that regularly.  Some of us are works oriented and we believe that we have to earn love and approval.  With God, nothing could be further from the truth.  He revealed His love for us long, long ago.  Do YOU receive God’s unconditional love just the way it is, or do you attempt to attach conditions?
